The Prepared Table: A Feast of Foods and Stories from Iraq, Afghanistan and the F.O.B. (Forward Operating Base of the U.S. Military in Iraq and Afghanistan) is conceived as an interactive event that incorporates videotaped interviews with Iraqis, Afghans and American vets, live performance, and a feast of foods from both countries and a typical U.S. military base. We call it an event, because, while there will be elements of performance and interactive media, the dinner will allow the guests (we do not think of them as "audience") to engage in conversation about our country’s longest wars. Behind the burkas, keffiyehs and military uniforms are real people whose human stories remain unknown to most of us. More than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan has left an indelible wound on our nation’s psyche. The Prepared Table seeks to put a human face on those most directly affected by the post-9/11 wars. Sharing these stories from American vets, Afghans and Iraqis means shining a light on their--and our--common humanity. Table is being developed in partnership with members of the Afghan, Iraqi, and American veteran communities with the artistic directors of ALICE Arts, writer/director Helen Stoltzfus, and writer/composer Albert Greenberg, and with media artist/filmmaker Ian Winters. The Prepared Table is the second in a cycle of "Burning Libraries"--original works that give voice to people whose stories are rarely heard.
